When the equipment first arrived, our high school athletes were absolutely thrilled, crowding around the boxes and treating the delivery like we had just won a championship game. For our Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) teams, clean uniforms are a major source of pride and confidence on the field and court. The impact hit home dynamically last week when one of our varsity players, who is currently navigating the challenges of living in a temporary shelter, was able to quietly wash his mud-stained jersey and practice gear right after school. He came to me before the game with a massive smile, saying it was the first time in months he felt like he was starting on an even playing field with everyone else. Your gift provided him—and so many others—with the dignity and comfort they deserve to play their best. Right now, our next steps focus on a team-led health, wellness, and responsibility project. Our student-athletes are taking ownership of the new space by creating a rotating schedule to manage the laundry for their respective PSAL teams. They are learning the practical skills of fabric care, sorting, and budgeting time around their practice schedules. This project has done so much more than just clean our sports gear; it has removed a massive barrier for our most vulnerable students and created a supportive community where our athletes can focus entirely on their sport and their studies.
