When I titled this project \"Books for the Win\" I wanted donors to realize how important not only materials are, but stories. These books provide us windows into points in time that are not brought up in a traditional textbook. We can reference and cross reference ideas, thoughts, and statements from history when we have materials handy. Someone might think, that sounds silly or unnecessary in a world of digital information, but kids get tired of always working on a screen. Often times, if I give my students the choice, they will more often than not choose print materials to work with over digital materials. There is also the challenge of students searching and searching and not finding what they are truley looking for when working digitally. These print materials solve a multitude of issues we face in the classroom and we are forever grateful. Thank you so much for being generous and sharing what you can with strangers. Other students immediately noticed the new shelves and were also intrigued with their unique look and how they draw the eye into the books.\r\n\r\nYou also provided a couple of caddies for supplies. We immediately put pens, colored pencils, markers, and highlighters in them. One of my student organized the whole thing by color and type of pen/pencil. Students are often doing projects in my classes and they are so grateful for easy access to materials and supplies with these caddies. They can easily share and find what they need.\r\n\r\nAnother item we received is an art display kit. We are not using it for art, but for those projects that we are working on. World History courses have many hands on projects that require work done by hand. We like to display the work of students not only for a gallenry walk, but also for students to see the different levels of work and detail. It is inspiring. I truly believe, especially with my teaching style, that books are the best gift any classroom can receive. It doesn't matter the age of the student, whether learning to read or reading to learn. Books provide a portal to a time and space that students can enrich their own understanding of the world and the role they play in it.\r\n\r\nFor this grant, I chose a variety of books, but several in the area of WWII. I find that any and all materials that we can get our hands on to delve deeper than the textbook into areas with a varitey of perspectives gives my students a fuller grasp of history. I would really love to teach a full year on WWI and WWII, but instead it is portion of a yearlong curriculum from Reconstruction to Modern America.
