Students connect with characters who face complicated family dynamics, economic hardship, and the search for belonging. These novels push young readers to think more deeply about perseverance and the strength that comes from community, which often leads to rich classroom discussions about empathy and how people grow through challenges. As students follow Naomi and Esperanza on their journeys, they learn how determination and hope shape a person's path forward.\r\n\r\nHaving both books available in Spanish creates an even stronger impact, especially for newcomer and multilingual learners. When EL students can read in their home language, they enter the stories with confidence rather than hesitation. It becomes easier for them to talk about characters' struggles, cultural traditions, and themes because the language doesn't stand in the way of their understanding. This opens opportunities for them to take part in class conversations in a more meaningful way, and it strengthens the sense of belonging they feel in the classroom. Offering Spanish editions also signals to students that their language and identity matter, which has a lasting effect on engagement and pride in their learning.","fullyFundedDate":1754847851868,"projectUrl":"project/sparking-the-joy-of-reading/9522209/","projectTitle":"Sparking the Joy of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Holm","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8067488"},{"teacherId":3220606,"projectId":9374737,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donation to our project, \"Kindergarten Keepsakes: Art Folders for Graduation Creations!\"\r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness, our kindergarten promotion ceremony was even more special. I feel so fortunate to have received funding for this project. I received both an on demand training for the Lively Letters program as well as a reproducible workbook for individual student support. \r\n\r\nLively Letters supports letter and sound acquisition in young learners by embedding pictures and stories in each letter. The letter \"G\" for example, is a made into a girl drinking grape juice saying \"g, g, g.\" The associated hand motion is pretending to drink from a cup. Students connect to each image and story and by using multimodal materials they quickly learn the name and sound of each letter. This program includes so much more and through the on demand training I am quickly learning about the other components. \r\n\r\nI have been using Lively Letters with my small reading groups and the impact has been amazing. I have first grade students that struggled so much in kindergarten and came in with very little knowledge that now can fluently name letters and sounds! Incredible!
