Instead of simply reading about bacterial growth, they are able to design experiments, collect data, and observe scientific concepts come to life. These authentic lab experiences build both curiosity and critical thinking skills.\r\n\r\nThe thermometer sensors have been especially exciting to use during our solar oven s'mores lab. Watching their designs successfully melt chocolate and marshmallows while tracking accurate temperature data made the science both memorable and delicious!\r\n\r\nAdditionally, the whiteboard erasers and glue sticks may seem simple, but they are essential tools that keep our classroom running smoothly. These notebooks are already an important part of our daily classroom routine, and students are using them to record observations, sketch models, and organize their thinking during lessons. One of our first activities was setting up the notebooks as science journals, where students labeled sections and personalized their covers. It was exciting to see how quickly they began treating the notebooks as tools they could rely on, knowing they would continue using them this year and again next year in 8th grade.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their reaction was pure excitement. Many were eager to decorate their notebooks and carefully set them up, and several commented on how \"official\" they felt. That sense of pride showed in how thoughtfully students handled their notebooks and the care they put into their work. These notebooks are already helping students take ownership of their learning and see their work as something that builds over time. They love being able to explore, test ideas, and get immediate feedback on their thinking. Many students are more motivated to participate and take academic risks because learning feels more interactive and less intimidating. \r\n\r\nThis has been especially impactful for students who sometimes struggle with traditional learning methods. My students are getting it!!!\r\n\r\nAt first, my students were hesitant and confused as to why we are doing \"art in math class\" but once we talked about how we are going to show our math thinking by coloring, my middle schoolers were excited.
