I approached the project with not a little bit of trepidation, since our building had never attempted something like this before.\r\n\r\nAs you know, I was motivated to attempt a free book fair because of what I'd seen and experienced running a paid book fair. While paid book fairs have their positives, I was frustrated by many parts of the process. The selection was narrow, the flexibility limited, and, most importantly, the book prices put them out of reach for many of our students. \r\nIt's also a big lift trying to get books for 800 students, and one I had to approach from a variety of angles. DonorsChoose was a big part of that, and I'm thrilled to report that I was able to raise more there than I thought I would be able to. Thank you for that.\r\n\r\nDonorsChoose required me to submit an impact letter in mid-September. The free book fair itself is scheduled to take place in October, around the time of parent-teacher conferences, so that students and parents both can browse the fair. I want to give you here a preview of what students will experience come October.\r\n\r\nFor one, English classes will be down the week of the fair. Students will be able to browse books and, if they so choose, get one then and there. They'll also be able to spin a prize wheel that will let them pick out smaller trinkets in the tradition of paid book fairs, including stickers, pointers, and stylish pens. \r\n\r\nIn addition, the fair will be open in the evenings of parent-teacher conferences.
