Over the course of the day, the presenter paired books by genre and made recommendations for middle vs. high school readers. As she did this, I feverishly added titles to my Amazon wishlist that I knew our students at HMSA would want to read.\r\n\r\nAfter I heard about a funding opportunity through Donors Choose, I had these materials ready to request for our library. Instead of having to pay for materials out of pocket, strangers from across the country made sure students at my school have current, high-interest titles that are relevant to their lives.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting this literacy project. I've already made a presentation for students letting them know the books have arrived and are available to checkout. They'll be well-loved and reread for many years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1780076760878,"projectUrl":"project/whats-new-in-young-adult-literature/10300490/","projectTitle":"What’s New in Young Adult Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Enger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1445249_orig.jpg?crop=666,666,x63,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1569472701472","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-enger"},{"teacherId":9868281,"projectId":8996246,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our Equipping HMSA Students for Math Success and Beyond project on DonorsChoose! Because of your generosity, we now have five scientific calculators that students can check out, as well as whiteboards for collaborative and independent practice in our Family Resource Center (FRC).\r\n\r\nMany of our students don't have access to these resources at home, so having a quiet, well-equipped space where they can work through problems—either on their own or with peers—has been a game changer. With the calculators, students can focus on understanding math concepts instead of getting stuck on long calculations. And with the whiteboards, they can write, revise, and visually map out their thinking without fear of \"messing up.\"\r\n\r\nWhat excites students the most is having access to real tools—tools they associate with \"serious\" math. They feel empowered. One student told me, \"It helps me actually want to practice. I can try stuff out and not be afraid to make mistakes.\"\r\n\r\nSeveral students who used to shy away from math have been coming into the FRC during lunch or after school to work on homework or prep for tests. It's been amazing to see how a few simple tools have sparked a shift in confidence and motivation.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping us create a supportive and resource-rich learning space.
