When the materials first arrived, the classroom buzz was electric; you would have thought we'd discovered hidden treasure! My students were wide-eyed, crowding around the boxes to catch a glimpse of the tabletop light panels and Makey Makey kits. Their immediate reaction was a mix of awe and pure curiosity—one second-grader even asked if we were \"building a real-life laboratory.\" That spark of wonder is exactly where innovation starts, and it's all thanks to your generosity.\r\n\r\nCurrently, we are putting these resources to work through the Engineering Design Process. The tabletop light panels have become a hub for our younger learners to explore symmetry and architectural layering, while our older students are diving deep into the world of circuitry with the Makey Makey kits. A standout moment occurred last week when a group of students successfully used the Makey Makey to turn a set of apples into a functional keyboard. The sheer joy on their faces when they realized they could \"code\" fruit to make music was a perfect \"aha!\" moment—it bridged the gap between abstract technology and tangible, creative play.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are utilizing the gift card to launch a comprehensive unit on city design. Our next steps involve students brainstorming and prototyping \"smart\" buildings that use the light panels to simulate energy efficiency and the Makey Makey to create interactive security sensors. Your contribution didn't just buy \"stuff\"; it provided the scaffolding for these kids to see themselves as the problem-solvers of tomorrow. We can't wait to see these miniature engineers bring their final prototypes to life!","fullyFundedDate":1761706349029,"projectUrl":"project/create-inspire-invent-where-future-en/9697670/","projectTitle":"Create, Inspire, Invent: Where Future Engineers Are Born","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. H.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp431177_orig.jpg?crop=576,576,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757479298752","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/431177"},{"teacherId":1445107,"projectId":9212134,"letterContent":"We've been using the acrylic paint and mini birdhouses to spark creativity and hands-on learning in our classroom. Each student has the opportunity to design and decorate their own birdhouse, drawing inspiration from nature, favorite colors, and patterns we've studied together. When I first introduced the project, the excitement was immediate—students' eyes lit up when they saw the wooden birdhouses and the bright, colorful paints waiting for them. Many had never worked with acrylics before, so even the simple act of opening the bottles and mixing colors felt new and magical. Some students began sketching designs before I even finished explaining the project, while others eagerly shared their ideas aloud, from rainbow stripes to camouflage patterns to whimsical polka dots. This hands-on experience gave them a sense of ownership, and the creative energy in the room was contagious.\r\n\r\nThe next steps are just as meaningful. Students will be finishing their painted birdhouses and writing short reflections about the inspiration behind their designs, giving them the chance to connect art with language. Once complete, the birdhouses will be displayed around our school garden so that their artwork becomes part of our shared environment. This not only provides a sense of pride but also creates a lasting connection between their classroom learning and the natural world outside. As we move forward, we'll connect this project to our science lessons by observing whether birds are drawn to their creations, tying in concepts about habitats, colors, and adaptation. Through this project, students are not only practicing artistic expression but also engaging in scientific inquiry, building confidence, and experiencing the joy of creating something that has meaning for the entire school community.","fullyFundedDate":1743116158172,"projectUrl":"project/birds-need-houses-too/9212134/","projectTitle":"Birds Need Houses Too!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1445107_orig.jpg?crop=308,308,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1678478658340","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/crystalhall"},{"teacherId":4836748,"projectId":8868943,"letterContent":"Because of your generous donation, my students were given the opportunity to be able to read informational texts that are engaging and informative. Your support has made a remarkable difference in our students' learning experience, and we are thrilled to share the positive impact you've had. \r\n\r\nScholastic Weekly readers offer students passages that are culturally relevant and interesting for them. Since the arrival of the magazines, we've witnessed a significant increase in reading participation. We've seen even our most reluctant readers eagerly flipping through pages and sharing fascinating articles with their classmates. \r\n\r\nWe've also observed a notable improvement in our students' reading comprehension and vocabulary. The varied topics and writing styles in the magazines have challenged them to think critically and expand their understanding of the world. They are learning new words and concepts daily. \r\n\r\nOur reading instruction incorporates a variety of engaging strategies to foster comprehension and vocabulary development. We begin with whole-group read-alouds to model fluent reading and introduce new concepts, followed by partner reading to encourage collaborative learning and peer support. Vocabulary is reinforced through the creation of graphic organizers, allowing students to visually connect words with their meanings. Comprehension is assessed through end-of-text questions, ensuring students grasp the main ideas and supporting details. To add an element of fun and review, we conclude each week's reader with a Jeopardy-style game, solidifying learning in an interactive format.\r\n\r\nWe are truly grateful for your belief in our students and your commitment to their education.","fullyFundedDate":1733894281102,"projectUrl":"project/comprehension-development-through-inform/8868943/","projectTitle":"Comprehension Development Through Informational Texts","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Escano","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4836748"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_82406","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":311,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":7,"percentLatinx":82,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"10.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":68.6,"schoolId":82406,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hawthorne Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hawthorne Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-mexico/albuquerque-public-schools/hawthorne-elementary-school/82406"}
