The students were so excited when they received their chrysalis boxes! They received them right after the completed state testing, which was such a nice reward at the end of a long day. \r\n\r\nEach student received their own chrysalis box and were able to observe their chrysalis over the period of several days, until the butterfly enclosed. With this project students learned about the anatomy of a butterfly, life cycle of a butterfly, where butterflies fit into food webs, and conservation. Additionally, we studied ecosystems and how monarch butterflies contribute to the ecosystem that they're a part of. Lastly, students documented their changing chrysalises with photos and writing everyday of our project. Then they created presentations based on their research on butterflies, as well as their real life observations for our final science project. Some students even went on to learn more about monarch butterflies and taught the class about their migration patterns, as well as issues that they are facing in North America. Families and friends were invited to our final presentations. \r\n\r\nThank you again for making this project possible. We even had our own indoor drone competition event at our school and invited the other schools around the island. It was a huge success! \r\n\r\nWe had both high school and middle school teams and one of our middle school teams was invited to a state championship competition and. One of or high school teams placed 7th in the state. This was the first time that any of our students flew drones and these drones that they were competing with were special drones, flying autonomously as well as remotely. \r\n\r\nA parent wrote into the school that her daughter was developing self-esteem that she had previously been struggling with and that she was considering pursuing an engineering degree. We saw an improvement in math work as well. Many of the students in the program had been struggling in their math class. They seemed to improve in their math classes as they participated in the drone program. Furthermore, they were required to keep a logbook that included ELA material and research components. Students improved their writing and research skills as they learned more about drones and the different uses and shared this information with others. \r\n\r\nMahalo nui loa for your support of or students! They were very shy in the beginning and even a little uncomfortable, especially when it came to using any tools or doing anything mechanical or with electronics. The team had to develop collaboration skills and communications skills quickly to build a group robot for competition in local and state events. This actually proved to be their first big challenge that they had to overcome.\r\n\r\nAs they designed and built their robot they learned mechanics, engineering, electronics, coding, and physics concepts. This was a lot is such a short period of time! Especially since they were at such a wide range of academic levels. They took on different roles including a coder, a lab book recorder, a mechanic, a designer, etc. to help manage the information they were learning. They also asked other teams to support them and called on experts when they found they were struggling with design choices. \r\n\r\nA parent wrote that her daughter developed a strong self-esteem because of this experience and that she was now considering a role in engineering. Students have learned that when playing games, things do not always work the way they want.
