My kids are students at the largest public school in the state. They come from all ethnic backgrounds, family situations, and socio--economic backgrounds. Our school has a large disadvantaged population, meaning many students "go without" at home. It saddens me that they have to also "go without" at school. I think one of the minimal expectations students have when they come to school is that they will have a place to sit. Hand in hand with this is the fact that I do not have enough books to provide students with their own reading materials. Being able to read, question, analyze and locate answers on their own are key skills for their success. I also need to differentiate for the wide range of students in my large classes, so using audio books is a helpful strategy.
