My students are excited and eager to read their new books. These books will help students learn skills, increase their reading for pleasure, and increase student engagement in reading. \r\n\r\nGraphic novels help students develop their visual literacy and inference skills, increase their vocabulary acquisition, and develop empathy. Graphic novels help students develop visual literacy by requiring students to decode text, analyze facial expressions, interpret body language, and understand how color palettes dictate mood. Students work on their inference skills by figuring out what is happening in the gutter. In graphic novels, the blank space between panels is called the \"gutter.\" To understand the story, a student's brain must actively infer what happened in that missing gap between Action A and Action B. This helps them strengthen their critical thinking. Graphic novels also help students increase their vocabulary by using context clues. The illustrations in graphic novels provide immediate, rich context clues that reluctant readers and English Language Learners (ELLs) can successfully decode and retain. These advanced words might otherwise cause them to shut the book in frustration. Graphic novels help students learn empathy. Graphic novels excel at tackling complex themes and presenting them in an accessible format. Visually witnessing a character's internal struggle helps students build deep empathy for others and find validation in their own experiences.\r\n\r\nReading is one of the main focuses at HCMS. Students have 10 minutes of sustained silent reading time per day. They complete one book projct per nine weeks in their English class. We are trying to grow a culture of reading for pleasure instead of strickly reading for learning. These graphic novels will expand access to books students enjoy reading for fun. \r\n\r\nThe graphic novel section is the most popular section in our school library. The majority of students enjoy reading them. Our relecutant readers are particially excited about having new options in their favorite serieses. \r\n\r\nThank you for donation to the HCMS library.
