Flocabulary brings reading, vocabulary, and literacy skills to life through hip-hop music, videos, and interactive activities. Through this resource, my students have been developing critical ELA skills including identifying text structure, analyzing author's purpose, using context clues to determine word meaning, and making evidence-based inferences — all skills that are essential for their STAAR Reading assessment and beyond.\r\nReading in our classroom is a dynamic, multi-layered experience. We use Flocabulary to launch new units by building background knowledge and vocabulary before students ever encounter a complex text. After watching a lesson video, students read the accompanying passage, annotate for key ideas, and respond to text-dependent questions that push them to think critically. Having both an audio-visual component and a written text means that every learner — strong decoders, auditory learners, and students who need additional scaffolding — has a meaningful entry point into the content.\r\nThere are students in my class who have genuinely surprised me since we started using Flocabulary. One student who has been working hard to build her reading confidence this year raised her hand during a class discussion to correctly explain what \"corroborate\" meant — unprompted — because she remembered it from a Flocabulary lesson. I also have students who historically resist independent reading but will eagerly replay a Flocabulary video multiple times because they want to understand every line. You are not just funding a subscription. You are funding the moment a child realizes that learning is something they can love. Thank you for making that possible.","fullyFundedDate":1767916738450,"projectUrl":"project/flocabulary-in-fifth/9985310/","projectTitle":"Flocabulary in Fifth","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morales","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4763433_orig.png?crop=423,423,x50,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1767720459408","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4763433"},{"teacherId":4763433,"projectId":9983565,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our classroom has been transformed into a place where reading feels like an adventure. This year, I have been using Nearpod, an interactive learning platform that allows me to bring our texts to life in ways that keep every student engaged and focused throughout each lesson. Rather than simply reading from a page, my students are actively participating — responding to questions, completing activities, and making connections with the material in real time. One of the features they love most is the gamified version of our texts, which turns reading practice into a fun, low-pressure challenge where students can earn points and compete with one another. What once felt like a quiet, individual task has become one of the most energetic parts of our school day.\r\nThe texts we have been exploring through Nearpod cover a rich range of skills that are central to 5th grade literacy. Students are practicing how to identify main idea and supporting details in nonfiction passages, analyze an author’ s purpose, make inferences, and use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. We have also spent significant time on text structure, teaching students to recognize how authors organize information and why those choices matter for a reader’ s understanding. In our classroom, reading looks like a conversation rather than a one-way activity. Students are annotating on their screens, sharing their thinking with the class, and building on each other’ s responses. The platform allows me to see exactly where students are in their understanding, so I can adjust my teaching on the spot and make sure no one falls behind.\r\nThe energy in the room when we launch a Nearpod lesson is something I wish you could see for yourselves. Several of my students who previously struggled to stay connected during reading have really come alive with this format. Some of my most reluctant readers are now the first ones to raise their hands when we discuss a passage, because the gamified activities have given them a way into the text that feels exciting rather than intimidating. Seeing a student who once dreaded reading time now leaning forward and competing for the top spot on the leaderboard is exactly the kind of transformation your support makes possible. Thank you for believing in these students and in the power of joyful, meaningful learning. It is a privilege to be your teacher in the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1767746519796,"projectUrl":"project/nacho-ordinary-classroom-with-nearpod/9983565/","projectTitle":"Nacho Ordinary Classroom With Nearpod!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Morales","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4763433_orig.png?crop=423,423,x50,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1767720459408","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4763433"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_134484","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":null,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":64,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":false,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":2,"gradesServed":"3 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Weighted Average","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":134484,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Harmony School of Excellence - Houston (3-8) on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Harmony School of Excellence - Houston (3-8)","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/texas-department-of-education/harmony-school-of-excellence-houston-3-8-/134484"}
