He demonstrated his understanding of these concepts by using the various shapes and colors as a way to convey his understanding of these terms. When he was done, he was allowed to make a structure which was a great reward. This was much easier and more fun than trying to pick out attributes from a printed page.\r\n Alphabet Letters and Numbers: This student was bored with the alphabet flash cards that I use. By being able to place the wooden letters and numbers into their appropriate spaces, the student was able to show he knew his letters which was a less stressful way of assessing the student vs. the student saying \"I don't know that one\" when presented with the flash cards.\r\n Memory Game: This is a game of short duration which gives the student a welcome break during testing.\r\n Sensory Fidget Stretchy Strings: These are a great assist to give the hands something to do so the mind can concentrate while testing. With hands being busy, there is an opportunity for self-regulation which provides a non-disruptive way to release restless energy. No photo available due to confidentiality.\r\n I-Pad case: This sturdy case with a kickstand is providing the student and assessor an opportunity to use the i-pad to obtain student responses when assessing for an evaluation. This digital format is far more fun and interactive for the student rather than answering in a paper/pencil format.\r\n\r\nWith these wonderful items, testing can be fun and allow for a creative way to demonstrate skills and abilities. I am very grateful to finally have had the funds to purchase a set of Island of the Blue Dolphin books for my 5th grade class. This book was chosen because 5th Grade Social Studies starts with learning about Native American tribes and how the environment affects how they lived in different areas of the United States. This book is a perfect compliment to this unit.\r\n\r\nTo start the novel study of the book, I read two chapters to the whole class. Then students are broken into groups based on their reading level. In each group, there are no more than four students. Students take turns reading the book out loud to each other and discuss the book. I read mostly with the lowest level readers. However, also take time to check in and read with all groups.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the book, novel study packets were purchased from Teachers Pay Teachers. This is where differentiation takes place. Each group has a different packet with questions and vocabulary based on their reading level. Skills practiced included vocabulary, context clues, figurative language, inferencing, characters, plot, rising action, climax, falling action, general comprehension, and much more! After each chapter, students complete the vocabulary section and answer questions. Students benefit from sharing their strengths in ELA and learning to work cooperatively with classmates. \r\n\r\nMahalo nui loa for your donation!
