In an attempt to build a strong 6th grade language arts program, I am requesting two class sets of novels by contemporary writers, Neil Gaiman and Grace Lin. Both of these novels, based on my past teaching experiences, have been proven to nurture an interest in reading for students who weren't previously interested in reading as well as continued to elevate the love of reading for students who were already avid readers. The themes and story-telling in both these novels are age appropriate, relevant and engaging. These novels will be used as foundations in two literature units during the school year, and from these novels, lessons on vocabulary, written composition, literary elements and analysis will be taught.
