Through this text, students explored the realities of the Vietnam War, the journey of \"boat people,\" and what it truly means to be a refugee. These lessons helped them build important historical context while also making meaningful connections to prior readings, such as Esperanza Rising, allowing them to find commonalities among immigrant experiences and resilience stories across cultures.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, this was their first time reading a book that reflects the Vietnamese American experience. This representation was powerful because it allowed some students to see aspects of their own identities in literature, while others gained a new perspective on the lives and histories of their peers. The book sparked thoughtful discussions, deep reflection, and a greater sense of empathy within our classroom community.\r\n\r\nIn addition, students will have the unique opportunity to hear firsthand from a Vietnamese refugee, my dad, who experienced this history personally. This connection brings the text to life in an authentic and unforgettable way, helping students understand that these stories are not just history, but lived experiences.
