Many of them immediately wanted to explore the tools, touch the soil, and help organize the materials for our garden area. For several students, this was their first opportunity to participate in a hands-on gardening experience, and their enthusiasm and curiosity were amazing to see.\r\n\r\nWe are using these resources in our work-ability classroom to teach practical life and job skills through daily gardening activities. Students are learning how to plant seeds, water and care for plants, safely use gardening tools, follow step-by-step directions, and work together as a team. One especially meaningful moment happened when students noticed the first sprouts beginning to grow from seeds they had planted themselves. They were proud, excited, and eager to check on the plants each day. That experience helped students understand the importance of patience, responsibility, and consistency while building confidence in their abilities.\r\n\r\nThe gardening activities have also created a calm and structured learning environment where students can practice communication, problem-solving, and sensory regulation skills in a positive way. Many students who are typically hesitant to participate in classroom activities have become more engaged and motivated during gardening lessons.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue expanding our garden projects by teaching students how to maintain plants over time, track plant growth, and eventually harvest what they grow. We also plan to connect these activities to additional lessons involving nutrition, healthy eating, and workplace readiness skills. Thanks to your generosity, our students are gaining valuable real-world experiences that build independence, confidence, and pride in their accomplishments.","fullyFundedDate":1771228045334,"projectUrl":"project/starting-garden-and-supplies/10081224/","projectTitle":"Starting Garden and Supplies","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kesil","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10427842_orig.jpg?crop=225,225,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1778601797820","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10427842"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4907","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":827,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":12,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":9,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":67,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.6,"schoolId":4907,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gunderson High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gunderson High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-jose-unified-school-district/gunderson-high-school/4907"}
