During therapy, we do a lot of work on individual words - decoding and sounding out. Over time, they have learned enough decoding skills to connect the text and read sentences and even paragraphs. However, they rely heavily on their specifically taught skills. Most books in the library and in their classroom are filled with wonderful rich vocabulary, but not words they are ready to tackle. This leads to a feeling of defeat. When I am able to give them a book (especially a chapter book) that they are able to read independently, their confidence grows so much! I wish I could capture the moment and post it into this letter! \r\n\r\nThe first book we read in class is always the best! The problem is that they want more! The books are expensive but so worth it!
