I teach in a small, rural Wisconsin school in a community where we like to joke that we have more cows than people. Resources can sometimes be limited, and many of the books currently on the shelves in my classroom are older than I am—and I am 53 years old! Being able to add a brand-new, engaging classroom set of a novel my students are genuinely excited to read is incredibly meaningful.\r\n\r\nIn fact, I saw the impact of your generosity before the school year even officially began. During Open House, one of my new 7th grade students came into my classroom and found out that we would be reading \"The Lightning Thief\". He was so excited that he literally started jumping up and down! That is a teacher moment I will remember for a long time. Seeing a student react with that much enthusiasm to a book reminded me why providing students with current, engaging literature is so important.\r\n\r\nAs we read \"The Lightning Thief\", students will strengthen their reading comprehension, analyze characters and their motivations, explore themes, make predictions, and learn to support their ideas with evidence from the text. We will also explore the Greek mythology woven throughout the novel and examine how Rick Riordan takes ancient stories and reimagines them for a modern audience. My hope is that the excitement I saw at Open House spreads throughout the class and that every student finishes the novel feeling more confident as a reader—and maybe even a little more excited about reading.\r\n\r\nYour donation did more than purchase books. You helped update a rural classroom library, put an engaging novel into the hands of every 7th grade student, and created an opportunity for students to experience a story together. Best of all, this classroom set will be used year after year, introducing future 7th graders to Percy Jackson and the adventures of \"The Lightning Thief\". At our Open House before school started, students were able to pick up their new English supplies, including their binders and notecards, and they were so excited to receive them! For the students who weren't able to attend Open House, one of the first things they made sure to do during the first week of school was get their binder and set of notecards. It was wonderful to see their excitement over having supplies that were ready and waiting just for them.\r\n\r\nThis week, students in grades 7–12 started learning their first sets of vocabulary words, and the new notecards are already being put to good use. Students write the vocabulary word on the front of each card and, on the back, record the definition, two synonyms, two antonyms, and use the word correctly in a sentence. The cards then become their own set of flashcards that they can use to practice in English class or take with them to study during spare time in other classes. Throughout the year, we will continue adding new words to their collections, helping students build stronger vocabularies and giving them a study tool they have created themselves.\r\n\r\nThe other materials are becoming part of our classroom routines as well. Students use their binders to keep their English work organized, and our whiteboards allow us to make vocabulary practice, review games, brainstorming, and quick checks for understanding more interactive. The pillow covers have helped make our classroom reading area a comfortable and inviting place to settle in with a book. We are just beginning our year of short stories, novels, writing, vocabulary, and discussion, and these materials will be used again and again. Because I teach English in grades 7–12, your generosity is reaching students across six grade levels.
