These books will open doors for my students in powerful ways. Jason Reynolds' Patina will be the cornerstone of our after-school girls' literature club, where representation is so important. My students deserve to see characters who look like them, talk like them, and face challenges they can relate to. Reynolds has a gift for writing stories that middle schoolers connect with deeply, and I know this book will spark conversations about identity, family, and perseverance.\r\n\r\nLater this year, my whole class will dive into Out of My Mind. This novel offers not just strong literacy skills practice but also meaningful lessons in empathy and inclusion. Reading Melody's story together will encourage students to consider new perspectives, recognize the power of perseverance, and build important social-emotional skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Having a full class set means every single student will be able to hold their own copy, mark important passages, and join in on rich discussions without feeling left out.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is both a community and an individual experience. We learn strategies together, discuss as a group, and also give students time to connect personally with what they read. These books will give my students opportunities to see themselves, to see others, and to grow in their love of reading. Thank you for giving them the chance to experience stories that will truly matter in their middle school years.","fullyFundedDate":1746818797504,"projectUrl":"project/summer-reading-with-schweda/9257662/","projectTitle":"Summer Reading with Schweda","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Schweda","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10000046_orig.jpg?crop=2356,2356,x1142,y1071&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756244088891","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10000046"},{"teacherId":9443704,"projectId":8167257,"letterContent":"Your donation has meant a lot to my scholars. Because of the supplies you funded, we have been blessed to be able to complete multiple art projects, and write hundreds of science questions on the whiteboard! My scholars have felt more prepared for what they are asked to do because of the NICE supplies provided.\r\n\r\nWith the whiteboard markers, scholars write down any and all questions related to science throughout the week. Then on Fridays we do \"Question Fridays\" where they ask their questions, and we research them on the projector together. This has changed the way that they view science, and has boosted their curiosity! It is my favorite part of teaching.
