During our \"Measuring Liquids\" unit, students worked in small groups using graduated cylinders and beakers to carefully measure, pour, and compare different volumes of water. They recorded their findings and discussed why accuracy matters in real-world science. Another exciting moment came when students used the microscope for the first time. They examined everyday items like salt, leaves, and fabric fibers, connecting what they observed to our lessons on scientific tools and units of measurement. Seeing students collaborate, ask questions, and apply math and science skills together was a powerful classroom moment.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their reactions were pure excitement and curiosity. Many had never used real lab tools or looked through a microscope before, so they were ready to try them. Thanks to our donors, students now feel like real scientists. Our next steps include a deeper investigation project where students will measure liquid mixtures, make predictions, and then observe changes under the microscope. They will apply what they've learned about units of measurement while strengthening their skills in observation, data collection, and scientific reasoning. These resources will continue to support meaningful, hands-on learning throughout the year, and our students are eager to see what they will discover next.","fullyFundedDate":1759648464508,"projectUrl":"project/learning-like-scientists/9787027/","projectTitle":"Learning Like Scientists","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Frankel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10162322_orig.jpg?crop=309,309,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754619587327","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10162322"},{"teacherId":8572031,"projectId":9555145,"letterContent":"I am pleased to report that the materials from my project are highly beneficial for both nonspeaking and speaking students who receive language therapy at my elementary school. Thank you again for recognizing the importance of strengthening communication in language-impaired children and for funding my project.\r\n\r\nTwo Talker Buddy Communication Devices were distributed across five preschool, primary, and intermediate classrooms for students with disabilities and intensive behavioral intervention needs. Students of all ages have shown an interest in using the devices to express basic needs/likes/feelings, such as going to the bathroom, enjoying music or videos, and feeling happy or sad - this includes several students who had previously rejected other technology. The devices are especially easy for the younger students to carry around the classroom due to their small size and lightweight design. One preschool student even calls it \"the remote\" and asks to use it often because it makes him feel empowered to communicate.\r\n\r\nThe Quick Talker 23 is being used in the preschool intensive behavioral intervention classroom, featuring nearly 50 real-life pictures of items or locations in the classroom. Examples include a mini trampoline, play kitchen, toy dinosaurs, blocks, Play-Doh, dominos, library nook, bathroom, and more. The images, text, and speech output allow students to make requests, choices, and comments by pressing buttons. The classroom teacher and assistants are being trained on how to model using the device with students. The implementation has proven to be functional and effective for everyday use, helping students increase their independence and self-efficacy as they navigate the classroom and communicate with adults and peers.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, I have used Core Words for Classroom & Home: Developing Verbal Communication Skills and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Abilities by Jennifer Jacobs to inspire book, game, and art activities focused on core words. For example, with students from two Head Start classrooms, we worked on the concept of \"have\" during a pretend shopping trip. In this activity, students identified which items they \"have\" on their list and then matched them through a memory game.\r\n\r\nI look forward to continuing to use these invaluable resources with my students throughout the rest of the school year and beyond.","fullyFundedDate":1758832408765,"projectUrl":"project/all-can-communicate-using-aac/9555145/","projectTitle":"All Can Communicate Using Aac","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Goodridge","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8572031_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y256&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1659661158592","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8572031"},{"teacherId":9700693,"projectId":9723133,"letterContent":"I would like to express my sincere gratitude. We started our first club meeting with creating vision boards (pictures provided) for what we wanted the 25-26 school year to look like. Thank you for the materials that help make these vision boards a success. Students used the affirmations stickers to express how they felt or wanted to feel. They set goals for their school life and home life. \r\nOur second meeting was the friendship bracelets. They really enjoyed these. The goal was to create a bracelet for someone else in our club. Often times we are so focused on the set of friends that we already have that we don't look to make more. They loved all the letters, symbols and multiple-colored strings that came with the kit. The 3rd meeting was using the arts/crafts to name 3 things that we are thankful for. I did laminated them and students were able to use them as placemats for our Thanksgiving Luncheon, before Fall break. In our music program, we are implementing the concepts of \"World Music Drumming\", a curriculum created by Dr. Will Schmid, which engages students in music making experiences that align with the theoretical principals of West African, Caribbean, and Latin drumming and singing traditions. Our goal is to not only create musical opportunities, but also for students to learn to work together, fostering a culture of good work ethic, dedication, and respect.\r\n\r\nSome of the materials were not available when the grant was accepted. Replacement materials needed to be selected. In our case, we received a drum, but we also decided to purchase \"boom whackers\" as our replacement item. The kiddos love them! 1st through 5th graders have been utilizing them and learning about simple pitch concepts, solfège, and ensemble playing. With the drum, it has been used for general instruction, small ensembles, and a concert. Pictures will be provided.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, other generations of students will continue to use these instruments, learning to take great care of them, and preserving them for the next generations. They then would go to another set of 3-D shapes to add to whatever the last group wrote. Such a great way to get students thinking critically and it was all made possible thanks to YOU! Students have had many other opportunities to use the chart paper and sticky notes in similar ways.\r\n\r\nAs the holidays approach, we will be completing many projects with the construction paper you generously donated! The students love to be able to do activities that spark their creativity.
