Your contributions of paper, markers, and various art supplies made it possible for our young creators to bring their ideas to life in a truly meaningful way.\r\n\r\n\r\nFor our workshop, I developed a lesson exploring the rich history and cultural significance of zines. I shared with the children how zines emerged as a powerful form of self-expression and alternative media—handmade, photocopied publications that gave voice to those often excluded from mainstream platforms. We explored how zines have historically provided space for marginalized communities to tell their stories, share their art, and build connections outside traditional publishing channels.\r\nThe children were fascinated to learn that zines flourished in the punk rock scene of the 1970s, and continue to thrive today as a vital medium for artists, writers, and activists of all ages. This historical context gave the students a sense of participating in a long tradition of grassroots creativity and communication.\r\n\r\n\r\nThanks to your donations, we were able to provide each child with ample materials to create multiple zines. Many of them have already started working on new editions at home, inspired by what they learned in our GSA.\r\n\r\nYour support did more than just provide art supplies—it helped nurture young voices, build confidence, and plant seeds for a lifelong appreciation of creative expression and community engagement.","fullyFundedDate":1733282037231,"projectUrl":"project/support-my-elementary-gsa-in-zine-making/8567650/","projectTitle":"Support My Elementary GSA in Zine Making!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Mads","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9308403_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y772&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1695916546670","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9308403"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88271","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":357,"numTeachers":22,"percentFrplEligible":21,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":74,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":83.8,"schoolId":88271,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Glencoe Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Glencoe Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/portland-public-schools/glencoe-elementary-school/88271"}
