I was so surprised and delighted by the outpouring of support for our painting projects. Students were so excited when the boxes of materials began to arrive. Students offered to help label and organize the brushes into table sets and I caught one brushing the new brush across their hand inspecting it gleefully as they unwrapped them. They told me it was \"lit\" that they got their own pallet, and didn't complain when I had them use the brush soap to demonstrate they knew how to clean some old dried brushes to gain access to their new set. \r\n\r\nThis project is the first time many of my students have used acrylic paint and we built up our painting skills before starting our finals. Students created a formative painting on paper; a mandala color wheel with tints and shades gave every student a chance to mix and apply paint. After demonstrating those skills, students applied that learning to a \"modes of transportation\" acrylic painting on canvas board. Students decided on their mode of transportation, found or took a reference image, then grid drew on their canvas boards, tinted the canvas, then painted. Many of the students were incredibly proud of their paintings.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the year I did my end of year survey with students. I asked them their prefered projects, what they think went well and what they wish I could change. So many of my students described the acrylic painting project as their favorite. I am so very glad that your funding made it possible for my students to complete acrylic paintings. I am so glad that so many of my students were able to be proud of themselves and their efforts and were able to take a tangible reminder of their hard work home with them. I have a few more canvas boards, and some paint, but I have a class set of brushes and pallets with lids that can be used for many years to come. I plan to make this lesson a repeat for students.
