Overall, each kit helps students dig deeper into understanding the text by using the provided props to discuss and retell the story. Students also have the opportunity to complete a text extension problem-solving activity. These kits help make the text more understandable and engaging, which is a tremendous gift for struggling readers. \r\n\r\nFor example, we recently used The Gingerbread Man Problem-Solving Kit. We read the story that was provided with the kit, and the students used the character toys to discuss and act out the story. Then, students compared it to another version of the story, allowing us to discuss the similarities and differences. The problem-solving activity was especially exciting for the students. We had a tub of water and an abundance of materials to build a raft. First, the students had to draw out a plan for a raft design that would safely deliver the gingerbread man across the river. Then, they created their design and checked to see if it matched their plan. Last, the students tested their design to check if it worked. If it didn't work, they made the necessary alterations to the design to try it again. In this case, the alternative ending they created for the gingerbread man to safely make it across the river lent itself to a creative writing exercise of what happens next.\r\n\r\nThese exciting activities not only help students with their deeper text comprehension and retelling of a story, but also challenge the students to think creatively about the story. I wish you could see the joy on the students' faces when they see that we will be working on one of the Fairy Tale Problem-Solving Kits.","fullyFundedDate":1763295127128,"projectUrl":"project/supporting-struggling-readers/9897761/","projectTitle":"Supporting Struggling Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rathmell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5187470"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_110351","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":188,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":59,"percentWhite":21,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"3 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"8.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.8,"schoolId":110351,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gateway Charter School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gateway Charter School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/delaware/delaware-department-of-education/gateway-laboratory-school/110351"}
