We had a bug maze that ran the length of one of the counters the other day! While some students were working on 3-d structures with their Chromebooks, others had elaborate bridges and bug garages. One of our bugs just spins in circles, poor guy! We're trying to get his legs bending the right way. The others are so much fun to watch. The student teamwork is great to see and the innovation and excitement and fits of giggles are worth it. My project, Building a Better Classroom, was completely funded at the end of the 2024-2025 school year and I couldn't wait to get the new materials and supplies out to this year's incoming first graders. \r\n\r\nThe purple folders were used to create a Math Calendar. This helps us keep track of our months, years, seasons, and weather using tens frames, tally marks and color coded numbers. The kids are completely engaged in this activity each morning! \r\n\r\nExpo markers and paw print erasers are a big hit! We use these for math and writing primarily. I attached a pom-pom to the end of the expo markers to make sure we always have an eraser on hand. I will distribute the highlighters as we move throughout the year and learn about note taking strategies.\r\n\r\nThe photo boxes made my math and reading centers complete. I was able to store all of the games for the entire year in 4 boxes. We started learning some of the techniques with our regular volleyball and basketballs so when we add a little weight they will know what to do. They had a ton of fun working with partners and small groups to work their core, squats, wall sits and so on. Adding the weights in will be much more appealing and will get them ready for middle school Physical Education. In the past I feel my curriculum has lacked in that area. Kids now days don't like to do regular fitness activities, but with their small groups they are more accountable and their peers encourage participation. \r\n\r\nI'm really exited to bring out the kettlebells, the small dumbbells and the medicine balls to open up new experiences for my students.
