I have several students who prefer to read nonfiction books and learn about places, animals, and other real facts instead of reading fiction. I struggled to find nonfiction books in thrift stores, so it has been wonderful to see students looking through the nonfiction section and choosing books to take home and read.\r\n\r\nAll the knowledge they acquire from these books helps build their background knowledge. It also helps them make connections when we discuss topics not only in science and social studies, but also in reading, and gives them ideas and information they can use when they are asked to write about a specific topic.\r\n\r\nI have only had this group of students for a few weeks, but I can already see their excitement about having nonfiction books available to them. Thank you for helping us build a classroom library that gives students more opportunities to read about the things that interest them and to keep learning beyond our daily lessons.
