We have been through some trouble with items not being available from the company we ordered from, so the aquaponics tank is not fully set up, yet.\r\n\r\nHaving just gotten back from Spring Break, the tank is filtering clean and treated water so that the fish can go in later this week when we have afterschool clubs.\r\n\r\nSince we ordered a smaller aquaponics kit, we were able to also order a hydroponics grow table. This is also giving us trouble as it requires gravity to pull water through the table, but the tubes all lie flat. My 5th graders will be engineering a solution after state testing, so that will come later!\r\n\r\nI am excited to have these items available for my students right in our hallway. A vision my principal shared with me when I took this position was that the hallways would be full of opportunities to learn. We have finished our sound and light inquiry and having enough lasers and tuning forks for each group certainly made the lesson much more impactful.\r\n\r\nLess time was spent rotating through centers and they were able to have all the resources on their lab table which meant more time to explore!\r\n\r\nI have been able to create card sorts and matching games for third and fourth grade labs. Having things to go hands on with is so important for students to retain their learning.\r\n\r\nI am certain that our students learned more this year with these resources than they would have without them. It was a mild weathered break and we did not need jackets. Wouldn't you know that this morning in Central Florida it was in the 50's? We have already given out a handful of jackets this morning! \r\n\r\nOur amazing school nurse and guidance counselor are partnering with me to help distribute the hoodies to the most in need students.\r\n\r\nChildren should not have to be cold at school. The laminating pouches were the most urgently needed, as I create labs and experiences for 6 days of use. It helps to make them more durable so that all the students get a nice experience with things not falling apart! For example, fifth grade did a fossil dig simulation where I hid paper bones in sand and they had to use tools and brushes to uncover them.
