This project challenged and transformed my classroom in wonderful ways. \"The Count of Monte Cristo\" is a challenging text for any group, but these students met the challenge and flourished. We used this novel study to work on independent reading and work, analyzing the importance of context - historical, cultural, and political - and making connections across a long and challenging text. After this unit, I was confident that students would go into Honors English II prepared.\r\n\r\nWhile reading this novel, students kept an interactive notebook where they kept character maps, notes on setting, vocabulary words they didn't know, questions and predictions, and notes on each character in the novel. Students referred back to this notebook everyday while reading. Typically, I would read one or two impactful chapters and explain any major plot details, then students would be sent to read a chapter or two on their own during the class period. Students would take notes and ask any clarifying questions during class. Finally, students would take the text home and continue their reading independently. When they came back to class the next morning, we would have a class discussion about what they read that night and either do an assignment to help their understanding, or continue with our reading. \r\n\r\nFor our opening activity, I created an immersion activity for students to help them understand the chaos of the books setting (France during the rise, fall, rinse and repeat cycle of Napoleon). One student was chosen to be King, and one student was chosen to be Napoleon. Both of these students ended up loving this book. They were engaged in discussion, debate, and were always asking thought provoking questions about the book and characters. They both said that when they first saw how long this novel was, they were not excited, but once we made it to Edmund's jailbreak, they were hooked.
