The books did not arrive until this September and then needed to be sent to get processed by our Central Media team (adding barcodes and putting the titles into the computer catalogue of our collection) meant our students have only been introduced to Stacey's Remarkable Books so far, however that single story sparked powerful engagement and conversation as we are a school for students new to this country. Students drew instant connections between their own lives and the main character's deep love of reading, while engaging in rich discussions about the importance of honoring and celebrating all cultures. Through these stories, we are teaching students how to analyze character motivation, evaluate diverse perspectives, recognize universal themes across different backgrounds, and practice critical thinking by examining how an author's unique cultural lens shapes a narrative.\r\n\r\nReading in our library and connected classrooms is a vibrant, active process designed to meet students where they are. It goes far beyond silent decoding; it is a space for dialogue, reflection, and discovery. On any given day, reading looks like interactive read-alouds where students pause to predict and debate character choices, cozy independent reading sessions where children explore self-selected stories, and small-group discussions where they dissect themes together. We pair these texts with creative responses—such as journal reflections, art projects, and collaborative discussion circles—allowing students to process what they read through multiple learning modalities.\r\n\r\nWhile the entire student body benefits from a more diverse library, these new additions have been especially transformative for our BIPOC students and reluctant readers. Seeing characters who share their heritage, physical features, and lived experiences validated on the page has sparked a visible sense of pride and ownership. Students who previously struggled to stay engaged during reading time are now actively seeking out these titles, drawn in by authentic, relatable storylines. With your help, I was able to get an iPad to use with my speech and language students in a variety of ways. Some of my students have alternative augmentative communication (AAC) devices that they utilize to help them communicate. With this iPad, I am able to make changes to their devices from my own iPad. I no longer have to take their device from them for long periods of time to make changes and updates. This has significantly increased their independence and decreased their time that they need to be without their necessary devices. I am also able to model communication on my device for these students.
