I often read aloud during individual counseling sessions and small groups, stopping along the way to ask questions, make connections, and help students think about how the characters' experiences relate to their own lives. Sometimes a story becomes the starting point for a conversation, role-play, drawing activity, coping strategy, or group discussion. Books also give students a comfortable way to explore difficult topics without feeling like they have to immediately talk about themselves.\r\n\r\nI have especially loved seeing students who may not always feel confident in the classroom become excited about choosing a book, listening to a story, or connecting with a character.
