It is always interesting to see what grabs kids, and all kids are different-- but all of our kids love to sharpen pencils. It's maybe a small thing, but it has already had a big impact on eagerness to draw and write. It has even drawn one of our students to speak (our students are largely non verbal at the moment): \"Please sharpen pencil!\" \r\n\r\nThe white board easel has allowed the class to have lessons at our tables so everyone can see, write, and draw out our ideas. As a first year special ed teacher, it was especially wonderful to have resources to supply the classroom--as well as our students. There has been something for everyone-- things for our music lovers, things for our visual artists, and things for all the kids to help cope with daily life. The kids especially love the giant mouth and our books about tooth brushing and other hygiene tasks. \r\n\r\nThe students have made so much progress with becoming independent, learning to take care of themselves and how to ask for help and support. Parents report that their kids look forward to going to school (I hope that lasts!). They draw faces, hearts, spirals, etc. All of this helps them develop their fine motor skills. \r\nThe students also loved the egg-shaped crayons. While they are intended for my students with smaller hands, the entire class was allowed to use them. They said, \"I want to use the Easter eggs\"! Even my most reluctant writer was excited about drawing a face as long as she got to use the egg crayons. \r\nWe are planning on using the felt boards that were donated by you when we cover our spring unit next week. When I shared with my students that we would soon be planting our own vegetable and herb seeds, they immediately began asking thoughtful questions about what plants need to grow and how long it would take to see sprouts. Seeing the greenhouse kits, grow lights, aprons, watering cans, and plant labels has made this project feel real and special—they are eager to begin and can't wait to become \"official\" classroom scientists.\r\n\r\nIn the coming days, students will plant their seeds using the soil pellets and potting soil, then observe and record changes in their science journals. They will measure growth, compare which seeds sprout first, and learn firsthand about the plant life cycle. Beyond meeting our science standards, this project will help build responsibility, patience, and teamwork as students care for their plants each day. Most of our students are completely non verbal; a few repeat phrases and can say a few words to express themselves. The supplies you have provided for music and art time encourages, teaches and allows students to express themselves through drawing, building, painting, dance and movement. One student loves drawing and is learning to say his colors (he definitely has favorites!). Another loves to build and construct. Another loves music, and to my surprise and delight, has taught himself (with some help) to take a record from its sleeve, place it on our new turntable, lift and drop the needle and viola! I am from another time and generation, and so have lots of records to share. The ability to hold and look at an LP/visual and connect it with particular songs has been especially wonderful for these sensory learners (Scott Joplin is the favorite of the month). The scarves were a bigger hit than I imagined. \r\n\r\nThe kids love touching and playing the instruments, understanding by senses how when you hold an instrument one way, no sound- but another way, sounds that you can make and control. \r\n\r\nBest of all, these items stay with the classroom for all students who come in the future. Our students are largely non-verbal, but they are all expressive. We have one student who loves music. He elopes and has behaviors that at the moment make it difficult for him to participate in music classes and school performances. But he learned how to play records on the record player provided by you in less than a week. At the moment, his favorite records are Leon Bibbs Sings Folk Songs and Scott Joplin. Another student loves to draw and color. All the students love the scarves and lying on the fluffy blue carpet. Your contribution didn't just provide materials; it provided the spark for our youngest learners to see themselves as engineers and inventors.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your gift is best seen through the students' amazing creations. Our classroom has been buzzing with activity: some students carefully constructed binoculars from tubes to \"scout\" the room, while others engineered rolling cars using the new wheels. We've seen little houses built with the construction materials and beautifully decorated with colorful art supplies that were funded through this project.
