My students consistently ask to borrow books from our classroom library that you helped obtain. The books are displayed on a shelf that highlights monthly themes, but more importantly, they reflect my students' backgrounds and funds of knowledge. Seeing themselves represented in books has helped students feel valued, confident, and excited about reading.\r\n\r\nThese new texts allow us to build essential reading skills such as vocabulary development, comprehension, making connections, and identifying themes. During read-alouds and independent reading time, students practice listening comprehension, discussing characters' feelings and motivations, and retelling stories using academic language. Even though I teach upper elementary students in third grade, they still love and benefit from weekly read-alouds, which model fluent reading and spark meaningful discussions.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is joyful and active. Students read independently, with partners, and as a whole group, often stopping to share reactions or ask thoughtful questions. Several of my bilingual students who were once hesitant readers are now eager to participate, proudly reading aloud or recommending books to classmates. Because of you, my students see reading not as a task, but as an opportunity—to learn, to connect, and to believe in themselves.
