These texts help students develop important foundations such as letter and sound awareness, vocabulary growth, story comprehension, and the ability to make predictions. Because the books include engaging characters and clear, repetitive language, they also support social‑emotional learning. Students practice turn‑taking, listening, commenting on stories, and connecting the events in the book to their own experiences. Many of the books also introduce early concepts such as colors, counting, emotions, and problem‑solving, which naturally integrate into conversations and extension activities.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom happens in many joyful ways throughout the day. During whole‑group time, we read aloud together, practice looking at the pictures, answering simple questions, and repeating key phrases or actions from the story. Students also engage in small‑group reading, where we can tailor instruction to their individual needs. Some students work on identifying pictures, others practice labeling objects or following along with the text. We keep the books easily accessible, and students often choose them during free‑choice time, bringing them to teachers to read again and again. Reading is active, hands‑on, and interactive; students point, comment, imitate actions in the story, and celebrate each page turn.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have been especially excited about the new books. One student who usually prefers playing with toys has begun independently choosing books from the shelf and sitting with a teacher to explore them. Another student who is developing language skills loves repeating key words and phrases from the animal‑themed book, he now makes animal sounds along with the story and eagerly turns the pages. A few of our quieter students have been engaging more during read‑alouds, pointing to pictures and smiling when familiar characters appear. These books have helped students connect, communicate, and participate in ways we hadn't seen before.","fullyFundedDate":1764706262495,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-bright-beginnings/9695438/","projectTitle":"Books for Bright Beginnings","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Gainer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3764590_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1705954646407","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3764590"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_35846","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":348,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":48,"percentAsian":12,"percentBlack":16,"percentWhite":31,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":23,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"16.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":94.8,"schoolId":35846,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Fairwood Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Fairwood Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/kent-school-district-415/fairwood-elementary-school/35846"}
