They are also using these materials to internalize visual arrangements of objects like dots on dominoes, dice, or arrangements of ten in a tens frame. These skills, which we as adults may take for granted, are of fundamental importance as these students develop number sense and start to work with adding and subtracting later in the year.\r\n\r\nWhen I first opened the box, students were amazed to see the assortment of tools. Students like to sort the marine animal counters by type, and find out which has the most in an intricate design they lay out on the classroom carpet. These initial informal comparisons will help them make sense of math stories where they compare two sets.\r\n\r\nWe are looking forward to reading the crocodile counting book together next month. Thank you for helping get these materials to us.
