Through reading and discussing the text, students learned how to analyze informational and narrative nonfiction, identify central themes, cite evidence to support their ideas, and engage in respectful academic conversations using Socratic seminars. The book also introduced important lessons about perseverance, teamwork, equity, and the often-overlooked contributions of individuals who helped shape history.\r\n\r\nOne of the most meaningful parts of this project was the opportunity for students to identify and research their own \"hidden figure,\" examining whose stories are told and whose stories may still be hidden. They investigated scientists, engineers, inventors, activists, and community leaders, then designed commemorative postage stamps to honor their chosen individual and defended their choices to experts in different fields during their exhibition of learning. Our partnership with the National Postal Museum helped students see how stamps can tell stories and preserve history, making their learning feel authentic and connected to the real world.\r\n\r\nMany students who do not always see themselves as avid readers were especially engaged by the book's connection to space exploration and real-life problem solving. Others were inspired by the stories of determination and resilience and became deeply invested in researching historical figures who reflected their own interests and backgrounds. Seeing students proudly share their research and artwork demonstrated that they had moved beyond simply reading a book—they were discovering the power of storytelling to recognize contributions that might otherwise be forgotten.","fullyFundedDate":1774224366809,"projectUrl":"project/hidden-figures/10166069/","projectTitle":"Hidden Figures","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Montgomery","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2622926_orig.png?crop=1080,1080,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1774224725629","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/unlock"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_65995","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1045,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":76,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":8,"gradesServed":"K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"29.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":65995,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Eminence Middle High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Eminence Middle High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kentucky/eminence-independent-schools/eminence-middle-school/65995"}
