Within the TEACCH method, students complete independent work bins for half of our academic periods, and the ball chairs have become an important part of that structure. The movement and flexibility the chairs allow help students stay engaged and focused while working through their tasks. They also serve as a reward for meeting classroom expectations, which motivates students to maintain positive behaviors and complete their work efficiently. The combination of structure from the TEACCH approach and the sensory regulation from the ball chairs has noticeably improved student independence and participation.\r\n\r\nWhen the ball chairs first arrived, my students were overjoyed. They literally jumped up and down with excitement at the sight of them. For many of my students, sensory tools like these are highly motivating, so their immediate enthusiasm was wonderful to see. They were eager to take turns and test them out, and it was clear right away that the chairs would be a valuable addition to our learning environment. Their positive reaction reinforced the importance of incorporating sensory-friendly options into our classroom routines.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, I plan to implement a more formal rotation system to ensure all students have equal access to the ball chairs. This structure will help balance the use of the chairs fairly, while still allowing them to function as both a tool for sensory regulation and an incentive for positive behavior. By setting clear expectations for when and how the chairs are used, I can help students understand that they are part of our classroom community's shared resources, not just individual rewards. They also practiced writing number sentences and compared quantities using the symbols >, <, and =. The hands-on experience of writing, erasing, and rewriting made the lesson both engaging and accessible for every learner.\r\n\r\nThe next steps in our math unit will have students continuing to build on their understanding of data by asking and answering questions about the graphs they create. With Sphero, they're not just learning how to code—they're learning how to think critically, problem-solve, collaborate, and persevere when things don't go as planned.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting things for students is seeing the immediate, real-world result of their code in action. When they write a simple command and then watch the Sphero robot follow it, their faces light up with excitement and pride. It's this instant feedback that really helps them understand abstract concepts like sequencing, loops, and cause-and-effect. The robots also promote teamwork in a natural, structured way—students love working in pairs or small groups to complete challenges and \"debug\" their code together.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who is on the autism spectrum and usually hesitant to join group activities, has truly thrived since we introduced the Spheros. This initial enthusiasm quickly turned into a productive and energetic learning session, where students were eager to engage and contribute their ideas.\r\n\r\nLooking forward, the next steps for my students involve deepening their collaborative skills and problem-solving abilities through ongoing projects using the dry erase table. We are currently working on a science project where students will design experiments and document their observations together at the table. The table will serve as a shared space for brainstorming, sketching out hypotheses, and recording data as a group. Students will be encouraged to take turns writing, revising, and discussing their findings, which will not only reinforce their scientific understanding but also build their ability to work as a team. As we move through this project, I will continue to model how to work collaboratively, share ideas effectively, and approach problem-solving from multiple perspectives. The dry erase table will play a central role in this process, allowing students to engage with the material in a hands-on way while also learning essential skills for teamwork and communication.
