We used the materials to create an incredible Cardboard City! Students worked together to design buildings, parks, and bridges—bringing their imaginations to life through teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity. Along the way, they connected their designs to stories we read in the library and reflected on how communities are built. It was inspiring to see them fully engaged, meeting AASL library standards while developing real-world skills and a sense of pride in their creations.\r\n\r\nTheir excitement was contagious when the students saw all the boxes and materials! The students' eyes lit up with curiosity and joy. They could hardly wait to start building. Many immediately began brainstorming what they could make—houses, towers, even a soccer stadium! It was such a joyful moment of discovery and anticipation, and I could feel their gratitude and enthusiasm filling the library.\r\n\r\nNext, students will use what they learned from building Cardboard City to explore community design and storytelling. They'll write short narratives about life inside their city—who lives there, what happens, and how people work together. We will connect this creative writing with informational texts about real-world cities and architecture. The project continues to inspire collaboration, critical thinking, and a love for learning—thanks to the generosity of our donors who made it all possible.","fullyFundedDate":1753914243204,"projectUrl":"project/empowering-young-innovators-through-the/9206684/","projectTitle":"Empowering Young Innovators Through the Cardboard Challenge","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Doud","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9424774_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727045933348","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9424774"},{"teacherId":9424774,"projectId":8792480,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our library and for helping us bring award-winning books like the Towner, Otter, and Sasquatch nominees into our students' hands! These carefully selected titles have transformed our library into an engaging, vibrant space where our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can dive into stories that reflect their lives, spark their imaginations, and introduce them to new perspectives. For many of our students, who come from high-poverty homes with few books of their own, our library is their main gateway to GOOD books. Thanks to you, they now have access to nonfiction texts as well that fuel their curiosity and fiction stories where they feel seen and celebrated. These books have helped foster a love of reading and given our students the confidence to explore new genres and ideas.\r\n\r\nReading in our library has become a joyful, dynamic experience. Students eagerly recommend these new books to each other and discuss the lessons they learn. From delving into themes of perseverance and teamwork in fiction to exploring fascinating facts in nonfiction, they are building skills like critical thinking, empathy, and creative expression. One student recently said, \"I love how these books make me feel like I'm part of the story!\" Another student, who used to struggle with reading, now checks out a new book every week and proudly tells me about their favorite parts. These moments remind us of the deep impact your generosity has on our students' lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this possible and for helping our students discover the joy of reading.","fullyFundedDate":1727547107242,"projectUrl":"project/meet-us-in-the-library/8792480/","projectTitle":"Meet Us in the Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Doud","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9424774_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727045933348","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9424774"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_100093","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":664,"numTeachers":39,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":29,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":40,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"17.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":70.3,"schoolId":100093,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Emerson Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Emerson Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/everett-school-district-2/emerson-elementary-school/100093"}
