From the moment the meditation cushions, floor rugs, floor lamps, and bean bag chairs arrived, the energy in our classroom shifted. Students were immediately drawn to the area—some curious, some skeptical, and some very excited about the bean bags! Within the first week, I overheard a student say, \"This feels like a little escape from stress,\" and another commented that it was \"the only place in school that feels calm.\"\r\n\r\nWe've integrated the space into daily routines and activities. Students use it during mindfulness breaks, after challenging group work, or when they feel overwhelmed. One particularly powerful moment came when a student who usually struggles to stay in class during high-anxiety days asked if she could sit in the Sanctuary Space for a few minutes—and then stayed and completed her work there for the rest of the period. It's clear that this calm, inviting corner of the room helps students regain their focus and manage emotions in healthy ways.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, I plan to incorporate more structured mindfulness and emotional regulation practices into our curriculum, using the Sanctuary Space as the heart of those efforts. Thanks to you, this is more than just a cozy corner—it's a meaningful part of our learning community. Your support has made a tangible difference, and we're incredibly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1733276546421,"projectUrl":"project/sanctuary-space-creating-a-calm-corner/8625718/","projectTitle":"Sanctuary Space: Creating a Calm Corner for Teen Well-Being","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nkata","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9458148"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_44216","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":701,"numTeachers":70,"percentFrplEligible":22,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":75,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"10.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":44216,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ellington High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Ellington High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/connecticut/ellington-town-school-district/ellington-high-school/44216"}
