Throughout this unit on rocketry we built straw rockets, experimented with the principles of thrust and learned about the parts of a rocket and how they work. These model rockets allowed them to see the things that they were learning put into action.\r\n\r\nWe set off rockets the over a couple of days right before fall break. I wish you were able to see the grade levels gathered to watch the rockets all be launched. Each time a rocket blasted off (and we shot off over 30) there were literal oos, ahhhs, whoas and wows. Students have loved playing these games and will often ask for them over other activities. The greatest impact I am seeing is that students are playing cooperatively with one another while playing games that stretch their logic and reasoning skills.\r\n\r\nOne of the games that I was able to purchase is called Genius Square. In this game students can play alone or against another player. It is a spatial reasoning game and can be difficult. Some students have had so much success with this game that it really builds up their confidence. Others who are often excel at all things are surprised when classmates they don't view as competitive can beat them in a game. Given the wide range of reading levels in the classroom—spanning at least eight grade levels—these headphones allow students to work at their own pace, creating a more personalized and equitable learning experience. They have worked out houses, keychains, and more. In first grade, they are getting ready to study polar animals and I am printing footprints for them to hold and explore. This level of hands on learning will enhance their understanding of animals they would never encounter in their everyday experiences.\r\n\r\nThese opportunities and many more are not literally at our students' fingertips.
