The most exciting project right now is setting up our aquaponic fountain. Students have been researching freshwater fish, aquatic ecosystems, and the balance needed between plants and fish to create a sustainable system. They are also designing and creating informational signs that will hang above the fountain, explaining ecosystems, weather tools we'll use for data collection, and the role of pollinators in a healthy garden. One unforgettable classroom moment was when we announced that our DonorsChoose project had been fully funded—students literally screamed with excitement and jumped out of their seats. Seeing their vision become reality was powerful, and it gave them an authentic sense of ownership over their learning.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, their enthusiasm only grew. They eagerly unpacked everything, immediately sorting supplies and planning next steps. They have already built the garden beds and are preparing the soil now that the weather has turned nice. Students have been researching which plants thrive in community gardens and debating which combinations will best support pollinators and local ecosystems. Our next steps include planting, installing the aquaponic system, and finalizing their informational signage so our outdoor classroom can serve as a living learning lab for the entire school. They are especially excited to collect weather data using scientific tools and observe how our garden ecosystem changes over time.
