The students were ecstatic to welcome these new items to our classroom! Since they arrived, the second graders have had multiple opportunities to dive in and stretch their learning using these amazing STEM activities.\r\n\r\nPLUS PLUS BLOCKS AND BASES: These are definitely a fan favorite! They are simply little, plastic blocks that look like two plus signs stuck together. The possibilities are endless. As a teacher, I love the freedom of creativity these blocks promote. The students are able to create patterns and objects, build structures independently or cooperatively, make real or imaginary items, and more! The bases allow for easy building and the many colorful blocks make for endless possibilities. Last week, I had students even building little block structures of each other!\r\n\r\nEQUILIBRIO: In this game, the students have to look at a playing card and recreate the structure pictured on the card, balancing blocks of all different shapes and sizes to create the structure. This is definitely not as easy as the students thought it would be! This activities requires a lot of teamwork, collaboration, problem solving, and perseverance, while also developing science, math, and engineering skills. This will be a positive contribution to my classroom for years to come!!\r\n\r\nMARBLE CIRCUIT: This game is part marble fun, part logic puzzle. The students have to place pieces to route falling marbles in a specific way to solve the puzzle on each card. The cards start out fairly easy, but quickly increase in difficulty, again, promoting critical thinking and problem solving skills. It has been fun to watch their productive struggle and communication when attempting to play this game!\r\n\r\nI believe students work the best when doing so in a fun, hands-on, real life manner and the items received through this project help my students to do just that. I cannot thank you enough for your willingness to donate and better the education and engagement of my students this year and for many years to come.
