Our growing school band program is thrilled to have this beautiful new instrument, and it's already making a big impact on our students.\r\n\r\nWhen the piccolo first arrived, the students were beyond excited. It was such a powerful moment for them to see that people outside our school community believe in their potential and care about their growth as musicians. The piccolo has added to our ensemble and has given our flute players a chance to grow their skills. Our band students are excited to showcase this new instrument at our annual winter concert.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has not only provided an instrument but also inspired our students to play with more confidence and joy. This year, our band has grown by nearly twenty students, and the excitement of having enough instruments for everyone could be felt the moment the drums were rolled into the room. \r\n\r\nThe band has always tried to capture the energy and presence of an HBCU band, and with these new drums, the students finally feel like they are truly building that sound. For many of our students—about 70% of whom come from underrepresented backgrounds and will be first-generation college students—the chance to participate in a program that reflects the culture and tradition of HBCU music is powerful. They see themselves in the legacy of those schools, and the new drums bring that vision closer to reality.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the equipment, their faces lit up with excitement. Some literally jumped with joy, while others stood silently in awe, hands hovering over the polished heads of the drums as if they couldn't believe they were real. One student said, \"Now we really sound like a college band.\" Another whispered, \"I never thought I'd get to play something like this.\" That first rehearsal was filled with laughter, music, and a renewed sense of pride in who they are as a group.\r\n\r\nThe next steps for our students are to continue building our repertoire and developing a drumline that can perform not only at football games and school events but also at community showcases. Already, they are creating cadences and call-and-response patterns that give our band its own unique identity. Their confidence is growing with every rehearsal, and they are pushing themselves musically in ways I have never seen before.\r\n\r\nYour generosity gave the students more than instruments—you gave them a voice, a rhythm, and a place to belong. These drums have become the heartbeat of our band, uniting a growing group of students around music, tradition, and pride. Your commitment to student success has made a tangible and immediate impact on their ability to learn, concentrate, and prepare for critical academic challenges, particularly our upcoming English 2 testing.\r\n\r\nThe healthy snacks you've provided through \"Fueling Focus\" have been an absolute game-changer in our classrooms. Before your donation, we often saw students' energy levels dip mid-afternoon, making it challenging for them to maintain focus during intensive study sessions. Now, with a readily available supply of nutritious options, we're witnessing a remarkable difference.\r\n\r\nA perfect example of this came during our recent \"Literary Luminary\" project in preparation for the English 2 exam. Students were tasked with analyzing complex literary texts and then presenting their interpretations to the class. This required deep concentration and sustained effort. Thanks to \"Fueling Focus,\" students could grab a quick, healthy snack like a bag of popcorn or Welch's Fruit Snacks during independent work time or even a short break, immediately replenishing their energy. I specifically recall one student, usually prone to afternoon slumps, power through a particularly challenging analysis of Shakespeare, attributing their sustained focus directly to the timely fuel provided by the snacks. It truly transformed their ability to engage with the material.\r\n\r\nThe initial reaction from our students when they first saw the \"Fueling Focus\" materials was absolutely priceless. There was an audible buzz of excitement and genuine appreciation. During our after-school tutoring sessions, which are often long and demanding, the availability of these snacks has been particularly impactful. When we unveiled the variety of flavored chips, popcorn, and Welch's Fruit Snacks, students' eyes lit up! Many exclaimed, \"Wow, these are for us?\" and immediately felt a sense of being cared for and supported. It created an immediate positive atmosphere, making them feel more comfortable and ready to tackle the extra hours of studying. The snacks not only curb hunger but also provide a welcome and much-needed energy boost, helping them stay sharp and engaged until the very end of our sessions.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has done so much more than just provide snacks; it has fostered an environment where our students feel supported, valued, and empowered to succeed. The \"Fueling Focus\" project is directly contributing to their academic achievements and overall well-being.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your incredible support. We are profoundly grateful for your belief in our students and our mission.","fullyFundedDate":1746555927584,"projectUrl":"project/fueling-focus/9313408/","projectTitle":"Fueling Focus","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Torr","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4412011_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1491769861744","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-torr"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_26287","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1772,"numTeachers":88,"percentFrplEligible":67,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":43,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.5,"schoolId":26287,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about East Wake High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"East Wake High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wake-county-public-school-system/east-wake-high-school-integrated-tech/26287"}
