Students loved having a variety of choices and being able to work toward something that was meaningful and exciting to them.\r\n\r\nThese rewards have become an important part of our classroom incentive system. Students earn points for demonstrating positive behaviors, making good choices, showing responsibility, and putting forth their best effort. The opportunity to shop for a prize or have their name chosen for a drawing gives students an extra boost of motivation, especially on days when learning feels challenging. I have loved seeing students encourage one another, celebrate each other's successes, and proudly choose a reward they worked hard to earn.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these materials have helped me create a classroom environment where students feel excited to come to school, work hard, and be part of our classroom community. The prizes may be small, but their impact has been BIG! They provide moments of joy and celebration while reinforcing the positive habits and behaviors that help students succeed. Thanks to the new filament, we were able to create rewards for our classroom incentive system, giving students something tangible and exciting to work toward. Students also had a voice in what we printed, sharing ideas for creations they wanted to see come to life. Several students became especially interested in the process and learned how to operate and run the 3D printer themselves. Watching their confidence grow as they learned how to prepare a print, start the machine, and patiently wait for their creation to finish was incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nThe excitement didn't stop at our classroom door. Students couldn't wait to tell their parents about what they had learned and what they were creating. In fact, several students became so interested in 3D printing that they now have 3D printers at home! What began as a classroom resource sparked an interest in technology, design, and creating that students were excited to share with their families. The printer became a place where students could experiment, problem-solve, make decisions, and see their ideas become something they could actually hold in their hands.\r\n\r\nOne of our most meaningful projects with the new filament was a special end-of-year gift. We printed an elephant keychain for every student to remind them of one of our classroom sayings: \"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.\" Throughout the year, this became a theme in our classroom as students learned that even when something feels difficult or overwhelming, they can accomplish hard things by taking them one step at a time. The small elephant keychain became much more than a 3D-printed object—it was a reminder of their growth, perseverance, and everything they had accomplished. Seeing how special this little token was to my students was the perfect way to end our year.\r\n\r\nBecause of the generosity of the DonorsChoose community, my students were able to experience firsthand how technology can turn an idea into reality. My students were thrilled when they first saw the new STEM and logic activities, especially the Picasso Tiles, Kanoodle games, Battleship, and Tetra Towers. These quickly became some of our most-requested activities. Students use them during reward time, after completing their work, and even during recess when they want a quiet activity to enjoy with a friend. It has been wonderful to watch students naturally gravitate toward activities that challenge their thinking while still feeling like play.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things to see has been students working together to solve problems. Whether they are building with Picasso Tiles, developing a strategy during Battleship, or trying to complete a challenging Kanoodle or Tetra Tower puzzle, students have to think ahead, test ideas, adjust their strategies, and persevere when something doesn't work. At the same time, they are practicing important social skills—taking turns, communicating, encouraging one another, handling frustration, and celebrating a friend's success. These are skills that are just as important as the academic thinking happening during each game.\r\n\r\nBecause of the generosity of the DonorsChoose community, I have been able to create opportunities for my students to learn and grow in ways that don't always look like traditional learning. These resources have given my students a chance to practice problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and perseverance while having fun with their classmates. As we continue our STEM learning, I am excited to challenge students to use these same skills in more complex building and problem-solving activities. One student became so captivated by the books that he chose to read them over and over again instead of participating in other free-choice activities. His excitement was contagious! Before long, other students were asking to read the books, sharing their favorite people and stories, and I could hardly keep the books on my shelf because they were constantly being read.\r\n\r\nThis project did more than add books to our classroom library—it created a new level of excitement around reading and learning. My students were inspired to explore the lives of people who changed the world while also beginning to imagine what they might accomplish themselves. The books have also strengthened reading comprehension skills as students identify main ideas, analyze character traits, make connections, and discuss the challenges and successes of historical figures.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, these books are used in a variety of ways. We often read them together as a whole group, and students love listening to the stories and discussing with a partner the things they are noticing as we read. These conversations help students think deeply about the character traits, challenges, and accomplishments of each person featured in the books. We also make the books available for independent reading, and they are often the first books students choose when given the opportunity. Students are eager to share with their classmates and teachers the interesting facts they have learned, and they frequently make personal connections to the experiences, struggles, and successes of these famous individuals. The excitement these books generate has helped foster meaningful discussions and a greater enthusiasm for reading and learning.\r\n\r\nMany students have been especially excited about these new books. Some of my reluctant readers have been drawn to the shorter chapters, engaging illustrations, and accessible writing style, making biographies feel less intimidating. Other students have eagerly explored multiple books in the series, often recommending their favorites to friends. One of our students read the Anne Frank biography and has since gone on to read her actual book. His excitement has spurred others to take interest in Anne Frank as well and many other featured individuals. Students are learning how to identify their feelings, practice self-regulation strategies, and respond to challenges in healthier ways. With the 3D filament that was purchased, we have been able to create many cool creations for my students. The students come in and are so excited to make suggestions about what items we should add to our classroom store. I have students that love to pick the filament colors we will use and then they love to sit and watch as the 3D printer builds the creations one layer at a time. \r\n\r\nAfter seeing the printer in action, many parents have reached out to me to ask about it. Their kiddos go home and are so excited to share what is happening in class. 3 or 4 students were able to get a printer and filament for Christmas presents. I have kids that want to talk to me about what they are creating and what filaments we are using in class. This project has opened up a whole new level of conversation between me and my students and also peer to peer. They love to talk about it!\r\n\r\nI have one particular student who is so excited about this and so he comes in each morning and love to help pick out our next project from his peers' suggestions. He loves to load the filament, remove finished projects from the printer's plate, and hand out items that have been purchased from the store. He can be full of energy and often impulsive, but this new found interest has given him an incentive to make sure that he is showing the appropriate behaviors at school so he can be a helper. We use a PBIS system for positive reinforcement. Our school uses ROARS - Respect, Ownership, Attitude, Responsibility, and Safety. When students are demonstrating these characteristics they are awarded points on an app. These points can then be used to purchase items from our classroom store. The items from this project have been added to our store and students are so excited to purchase them with their positive points. \r\n\r\nWhen we added these items to our classroom store, you could hear the excitement as students opened the store and discovered the new additions. A few of the favorite items are the balls of slime, the sports spinners and the multi-color pens. We love looking for the positive characteristics in our students and they love being recognized for them.
