The new blender and griddle have quickly become classroom favorites. My students are using these tools to practice real-world skills like measuring ingredients, sequencing steps, and following multi-step directions—all while working together as a team. Cooking has become an opportunity for them to apply their math and reading skills in meaningful, engaging ways as well as practice social skills by conversing with each other during their cooking time. \r\n\r\nThese experiences help them gain confidence and independence that extend far beyond the classroom. They're learning that they can create something from start to finish, make healthy choices, and take ownership of their learning. The griddle has become a staple this fall and we look forward to using our new blender to make milkshakes, sauces and smoothies in the coming months. Many had never seen plants grow without soil, so when they first saw the boxes they were so excited! They eagerly helped set up the systems using a slideshow created by our OT and they carefully placed the seed pods. We have a plan to check on them each day, monitoring the water levels and making sure that our plants are growing. \r\n\r\nSince then, the hydroponic systems have become part of our daily routine. Students take turns monitoring water levels, will record plant growth, and compare notes on which pods are growing fastest. They will use our writing program to write about their experiences growing plants! We are connecting the project to our science lessons on plant life cycles and ecosystems, but it's also tied directly to our weekly cooking labs. Soon, the herbs and vegetables we grow in class will become the ingredients in recipes my students prepare together—giving them the powerful experience of taking food from seed to table.\r\n\r\nNext, we plan to harvest our first crops and use them in simple dishes during cooking lab, helping students see how their care and responsibility in the garden connects to the meals they create. This project has sparked excitement about healthy eating, sustainability, and teamwork, while giving my students pride in knowing they grew the food they're cooking. Your donation of weaving supplies (key rings and thread) made it possible for students to explore multiple skills and media.\r\n\tWe started our exploration of this art method by learning the history of Kumihimo Weaving in Japan. This style includes everything from Samurai sword hilts to modern day shoe laces! Students were impressed by the complexity of traditional Kumihimo Weaving, but were quickly able to master the craft. Students used the thread to begin with a simple 2 color design. They tied their braids to the key chains and wore them proudly. Once students mastered the simple 2 color design they were able to manage multiple colors and lengths.\r\n\tAs an educator, the best part of this project was the variation of engagement it provided. Students requiring extensive individualized support were able to master and even found the repetitive nature of the weaving to be calming. Numerous students who often struggled to engage asked to take their weaving with them to other classes and home. Our administrators even asked for braids in our school colors.\r\n Overall, the impact of your generosity has been immeasurable. Through your support, students have experienced the joy of artistic expression. This is an activity that I can't wait to repeat for many years to come!\r\nThank you once again for your support. Your donation of inking supplies (pastels, ink, metallic markers, and foam plates) made it possible for students to explore multiple skills and media.\r\n\tStudents started by using the donated pastels to create 4 styles of design-swirl, criss cross, ripple, and ray. Students used either warm or cool colors of construction paper with the pastels. These simple design strategies began the basis for the students' projects. It was neat to see the variety and unique art personalities start to show at the early stages of the project. \r\n\tFrom there, students practiced drawing nature objects and then tracing them on the foam plates. Students chose everything from insects to large plants. Some students had whole flowers, some chose to etch parts, such as leaves. The variety created also allowed for students to borrow and use each other's prints.\r\n\tStudents were then able to practice some inking skills. This technique took a little practice for many students. It took the right amount of ink on the foam stamps and pressure to create crisp prints. Several students then chose to embellish their pieces with the metallic pens, which allowed students to make certain aspects of their work pop. The last step was to mount their chosen prints for presentation similar to the work of real life artists, complete with title and signatures! Students were able to own their creations.\r\nOverall, the impact of your generosity has been immeasurable. Through your support, students have experienced the joy of artistic expression. Your contribution has not only provided them with essential materials but has also empowered them to explore their passions and talents to the fullest\r\nThank you once again for your support.
