The book that you helped buy us, \"Killing Mr. Griffin\", is one that I am excited to teach this fall. The students often tell me that I am the \"hard\" teacher and that I \"expect\" a lot. Well, Mr. Griffin is the same and his students hate him. Thank aspect alone is enough to make reluctant readers want to read the book. In today's world, I will use any angle to get them to read and enjoy.\r\n\r\nThe book itself is one that is about peer pressure and family strife. It deals with real world issues and explores what happens when we don't stand up for ourselves. This is another issue that I am passionate about teaching the students. The monthly LitCrate subscription boxes that my students (and staff, when boxes are available) sign up for have helped me build relationships with my students by finding out their reading habits and matching a new-to-them book to their interests. \r\n\r\nI always keep the month's activity a secret until the boxes are delivered. This past year my monthly LitCrate activities included painting their own wooden drink coaster (this specific project), build botanical plants with Legos, write poems with magnetic word tiles, piecing together a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle, and learning new card games (among other things). Every single one of them now have a place to put their folders and music every single day. With this new development I have had 0 of my 6th graders lose or damage their music. Before this change at least once a week I had to go and get new copies of music because \"the backpack monster was hungry.\" These shelves have given them the opportunity to be responsible. They are responsible for their music and the cleanliness of their shelf.\r\n\r\nI have also been able to help my jazz and concert band with their folders. The number of times I have had to reprint music has gone down significantly. I can also give them extra music, fingering charts, and forms without wondering if the papers will be destroyed. Rehearsals also run a lot smoother because we can get the music out so much faster.\r\n\r\nI have also used one of the cabinets as a storage for the percussion sticks. This final cabinet is amazing because the percussion can now be organized. Each stick has its own spot and they are within easy reach. These cabinets are amazing and we use them every single day.
