It has had an immediate impact on my music classroom and student engagement across all grade levels, K–6. The new instruments — tambourines, drumsticks, castanets, finger cymbals and guiros — are now used daily during unpitched rhythm reading activities to help students build rhythmic accuracy, listening skills, and ensemble playing. When the instruments first arrived, students were thrilled to see shiny, brand-new materials specifically for them, and their enthusiasm has continued long after the boxes were opened. The castanets have become a student favorite, and the excitement around the new instruments has made students even more eager to participate in music class each day!\r\n\r\nRecently, students used the new instruments during a Jazz unit where they explored pieces such as A-Tisket, A-Tasket by Ella Fitzgerald and It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) by Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Students played along with the recordings exploring Jazz characteristics and having experience with Improvisation, something that is essential in Jazz. \r\n\r\nOur next step is expanding rhythm performance opportunities for our older elementary students using the new drumsticks. We have been working on bucket drumming fundamentals with 5th and 6th grade students as they learn to follow music notation in a full ensemble setting. Students are currently preparing for an end-of-year school-wide assembly performance, where they will showcase their growth in rhythm reading, teamwork, and musical performance skills.\r\n\r\nWith your contribution, student engagement and attitude towards music making has improved with the new equipment! All the children were very excited when the snacks first arrived. They were happy to see some of their favorite snacks like chocolate chip cookies and Pringles.\r\n\r\nSomething I have been trying to teach the students is to not waste food. At lunch, students are required to get fruit or vegetable. I tell the students that even if they don't plan to eat it, to still get it anyway and just put it in the snack bin because someone might want to eat it later. Sharing food can be a complicated lesson as we have to be aware of allergies but with certain foods I try to get students to understand that they can pass it along to a classmate as long as they check with a adult to make sure it's okay. I'm hoping to create another food project to get more snacks to last till the end of the school year.","fullyFundedDate":1763498188275,"projectUrl":"project/cant-learn-if-youre-hungry/9867169/","projectTitle":"Can't Learn if You're Hungry","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Konneh","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9316810"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_89665","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":271,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":83,"percentWhite":5,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"16.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":55.3,"schoolId":89665,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about East Lansdowne Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"East Lansdowne Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/william-penn-school-district/east-lansdowne-elementary-school/89665"}
