These books are more than just stories on a shelf. They are tools that help students develop critical literacy skills, including textual analysis, argumentation, synthesis of ideas, and effective written communication. As students read and discuss these works, they learn to evaluate an author's craft, analyze themes and perspectives, support claims with evidence, and connect literature to historical and contemporary issues. For my AP Language and Composition students, independent reading also builds the background knowledge and analytical thinking necessary for success on the AP Exam, where students must draw upon a broad understanding of the world to craft sophisticated arguments.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is highly interactive. Students don't simply read and answer questions. They discuss, debate, write, and reflect. One favorite activity is our \"Memoir Jenga\" discussion strategy. Each block is numbered with a thought-provoking discussion question connected to the text. As students pull blocks, they engage in authentic conversations about the author's experiences, choices, and message. When the tower inevitably falls, everyone writes, using the discussion to deepen their thinking and strengthen their written responses. Activities like these help students see reading as an active process rather than a passive one.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these books can be seen in students' enthusiasm for reading. One title in particular, Station Eleven, has become a classroom favorite. Students frequently tell me it is the best book they have read all year. They connect with its themes, enjoy discussing its characters, and eagerly recommend it to their classmates. Watching students become invested in a book, especially those who may not have considered themselves readers at the beginning of the year, is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, your support has shown my students that people beyond our classroom believe in their potential. Every book represents an investment in their future and an opportunity to broaden their understanding of themselves and the world around them. One particular student felt like she finally understood factoring after a one-on-one session with me. I am really excited about starting off next year with the tiles. \r\n\r\nThe color paper helps my students and myself stay organized. I can make multiple sets and keep up with the parts to an activity if they are color coordinated. We competed in our first race of the season on January 16th in Oxford, Alabama. \r\n\r\nStudents were excited to have team shirts. They also came in handy to layer up due to the chilly temperatures.
