Instead of walking into a space that feels like just another school office, students now have comfortable places to sit, talk, connect, and participate in counseling activities. One of the first things students noticed was the new seating, and they were excited to choose where they wanted to sit and make themselves comfortable.\r\n\r\nSomething as simple as having a cozy chair or grabbing a pillow can make a big difference when a student is coming to see the counselor. Some of our conversations involve friendship problems, worries, changes at home, school frustrations, or other things that are not always easy for children to put into words. Being able to sit somewhere comfortable helps those conversations feel more natural and less formal.\r\n\r\nThe seating has also given us more flexibility for small groups and activities. Students can gather together in a way that encourages conversation and connection rather than always sitting at a traditional desk or table.\r\n\r\nAs the school year continues, these spaces will be used for individual check-ins, small counseling groups, problem-solving conversations, and opportunities for students to build social-emotional skills. What may look like a small collection of sensory items has quickly become something students genuinely look forward to having available.\r\n\r\nI have especially noticed the difference during conversations that are a little harder for students. Sometimes sitting across from an adult and being asked to talk about a problem can feel like a lot for a child. Having something in their hands gives them another place to direct some of that nervous energy. I've had students quietly fidget while telling me about a friendship problem, a frustrating morning, or something that happened in class. Instead of the sensory tool becoming the focus, it often helps the conversation happen more naturally.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, these materials will remain available during check-ins, counseling activities, and small-group work. I also want students to become more independent in figuring out what helps them. Some students need movement, some prefer something tactile, and others may discover that a sensory tool isn't what they need at all. A student who is feeling restless may need something completely different from a student who is feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty concentrating.\r\n\r\nThese resources have also given us opportunities to talk about self-awareness and recognizing what our bodies are telling us. Rather than simply telling a student to \"focus,\" we can help them identify what is making focusing difficult and choose a strategy or sensory tool that may help.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue learning how to independently recognize when they need additional support and select tools that help them regulate their bodies, improve their focus, and feel ready to learn. I loved watching them explore the different textures, movements, and styles and figure out which ones worked best for them. I have also noticed that having a fidget in their hands can make it much easier for some students to open up during a conversation. Sometimes a student who is hesitant to talk will begin playing with a fidget, relax a little, and suddenly start sharing what is really going on.\r\n\r\nOur next step is continuing to help students understand that fidgets can be more than something fun to play with—they can be intentional coping and self-regulation tools.
