My students loved the new flexible seating \"comfy spots\" as additions to our classroom. All of the materials have stood the test of time and they continue to be used every year by my students. It's great to give my students' autonomy as well as teach them and allow them to practice the responsibility involved in choosing a seat in which they can focus the best. The comfortable seating also acts as an incentive for my students as well as gen-ed students to come into my classroom, which reduces the stigma of a special education classroom. Having multiple copies means we can now read together in small groups, allowing students to share ideas, ask questions, and connect more deeply with the stories. Seeing stacks of real novels waiting just for them made the experience feel special and encouraged even my most hesitant readers to dive in.\r\n\r\nWe've already started using these books for guided reading and literature circles, and the conversations they spark have been powerful. Stories like Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and The House on Mango Street have given students a chance to explore culture, history, and identity, while books like Because of Winn-Dixie and Sideways Stories from Wayside School add joy and humor to our reading time. Thank you for giving my students access to books that will not only build their literacy skills but also broaden their perspectives and inspire a love of reading.","fullyFundedDate":1575445782440,"projectUrl":"project/books-books-books-bookseveryone-ne/4466492/","projectTitle":"Books, Books, Books, Books...Everyone Needs To Read Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. N","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrsnorment"},{"teacherId":4677448,"projectId":4322249,"letterContent":"When the boxes arrived, my students' excitement filled the room. The mailbox organizer and backpacks have helped students keep their work safe and accessible, which makes our day run much more smoothly.\r\n\r\nThe pens, markers, paper, and magnetic letters have already made a noticeable difference during small group instruction. Students love using the colorful letters to build words and the laminated materials to practice skills again and again. The most exciting part for our students is the ability to explore texts that match their reading level while still feeling like part of the classroom community. Students (5) taking the iReady reading assessment made significant progress in phonological awareness, vocabulary, and comprehension (informational and literary) text. Students taking the Star 360 assessment (11) made significant gains in craft and structure (literary and informational text), key ideas and details, and vocabulary acquisition and use. \r\n\tThe students were actively engaged in the book Down the Road, by Alice Schertle and E. B Lewis, while learning about using illustrations to glean information, build vocabulary, and comprehension activities i.e setting a purpose for reading, prediction, etc.. The beautiful illustrations helped to enhance the enjoyment of the text. Fables by Arnold Lobel was used to retell stories, analyze characters, determine the central messages of the stories, and understand key trait vocabulary. Students were given an opportunity to write their own fables with a partner. As the students read The Tin Forest, they were engrossed in the story about how a lonely old man took garbage that had been discarded and built a beautiful forest. Comprehension lessons included: context clues, figurative language, main idea and key details, identifying supporting details, cause and effect, fact and opinion, and drawing inferences. Next, we will be reading The Kapok Tree to introduce a study of the rainforest which will include an integration of technology for research projects; i.e.; animals, plants, climate, etc. Amber Brown: Second Grade Rules and Amber Brown Goes Forth were student favorites. I engaged them with activities such as partner-reading, integrating an art project, letter writing, and a plethora of comprehension activities; i.e. prediction, using illustrations to comprehend text, and vocabulary. Titles New Kid, The Mighty Miss Malone, Bud Not Buddy,, The Watson Go to Birmingham, and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind will be read with a focus on Social Emotional Learning (SEL); i.e. perseverance, determination, empathy, sharing, and bully prevention. \r\n\tReading looks to be fun and engaging in my room. It is buzzing with student to student discourse, partner-reading, and whole group discussions. It is the sound of learning. Students seem to enjoy the Amber Brown books and the fables the most. I am filled with gratitude for the generosity of the donors.","fullyFundedDate":1729642787605,"projectUrl":"project/excellent-enrichment-for-earles-exempla/8828035/","projectTitle":"Excellent Enrichment for Earle's Exemplars","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Sims","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp922218_orig.jpg?crop=574,574,x166,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746198512534","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/922218"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_5826","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":261,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":81,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"10.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.0,"schoolId":5826,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Earle Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Earle Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/chicago-public-school-district-299/earle-elementary-school/5826"}
