This year I am blessed to be teaching in a middle school special education resource room. My students astonish me every day with their creativity and unique spirits and personalities. Together, we face challenges with resiliency and they have helped me to continue to progress and grow as a person just as much as I have helped them.
My classroom environment reflects my values: it is comfortable, warm, welcoming, and provides choices for autonomy and independence. There is a calming corner for students to use when they are overwhelmed, they need to become emotionally regulated or simply when they need a quick break from the monotony and stressors of being a middle schooler.
I am proud that my classroom is a safe, calm respite from the overstimulating and overwhelming environments students face in other parts of their days.
