The desks are able to move when groupwork is required but mostly students prefer to use them for independent work. Some students actually prefer to sit by themselves when certain assignments are being completed, and our new desks allow them to do so. We sometimes use one as the Birthday Seat/Student of the Month Seat, they are given colored looseleaf to use during class, and the seat is moved to wherever they prefer(usually with a friend) for that day.\r\n\r\nThe speaker was used during a PepRally , when we play in class jeopardy and sometimes during town hall meetings.\r\n\r\nThis donation to our classroom is DEEPLY appreciated. Some students find sitting still in a traditional desk challenging. Some are too tall to sit comfortably for 45-90 minutes at a time, some find sitting still challenging. That interferes with the ability to focus. The standing desks allow some of my young men the flexibility to stand during the lesson, be comfortable and maintain class participation! \r\n\r\nMy students have worked out a \"schedule\" that allows everyone the opportunity to stand at the desk. It has been a game changer for some.\r\n\r\nThe grey chair is often used during independent reading, during our social emotional check-ins and as a \"reward\". Once again the students have set up a system that lets the \"birthday boy or high achiever for the week\" sit in the chair during class. \r\n\r\nWe really appreciate the gifts. Instead of waiting for limited computer lab time, scholars can jump into assignments immediately whether that's drafting essays, conducting research, or working together on projects. These Chromebooks also allow us to use learning platforms that provide instant feedback, helping students strengthen skills and build confidence as they see their progress.\r\n\r\nWhat excites the scholars most is the sense of independence and ownership. Many of them are used to using technology for entertainment, but now they see it as a tool for achievement. They enjoy being able to collaborate on shared documents, create presentations, and explore topics that matter to them. When they realize they can produce polished work, share ideas with classmates, and access information from anywhere, their engagement goes up dramatically.\r\n\r\nThe impact is especially powerful for some of our quieter scholars or those who may struggle with traditional instruction. Technology gives them another way to participate and express themselves. For example, scholars who may hesitate to speak in class often contribute thoughtful ideas through digital discussions or collaborative documents. Others have taken pride in researching topics connected to their communities and presenting their findings with confidence.\r\n\r\nWe're also pairing this technology with something just as important—supporting the whole learner. Providing snack packs for our urban teenage boys ensures they can stay focused and energized throughout the school day. When male learners particularly have both the tools to learn and the nourishment they need, they are better prepared to engage, think critically, and push themselves academically.\r\n\r\nAt Eagle Academy Harlem, these Chromebooks are more than devices—they're opportunities. They help our young men build the digital skills, confidence, and curiosity they need to succeed in school and beyond.","fullyFundedDate":1764697547923,"projectUrl":"project/culturally-responsive-teaching/9742928/","projectTitle":"Culturally-Responsive Teaching","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Hester","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8671749_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1675156333534","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8671749"},{"teacherId":18446,"projectId":8802679,"letterContent":"My students have carved out time during the week to relax and express theirselves while developing a mood meter corner.
