We received the class sets of chapter books in less than a week after they were ordered. My students were so excited! \r\n\r\nWhen we read the books together in my classroom, we are all gathered together on my huge front carpet. Each student has a copy of the text in-hand so they can follow along, see and hear fluent reading, and learn vocabulary, figurative language, and nuisances in the English language as we go. \r\n\r\nTheir favorite part is when I stop reading just before the last line of a chapter creating a cliffhanger! I tell them all to close their books so they can't read ahead. What was once just an open space has now become the heart of our classroom—a place where students feel comfortable and welcome. The rug has truly transformed our room into a cozy gathering space.\r\n\r\nWe now use the rug daily for morning meetings, story time, and class discussions. Having a defined space where we can come together makes our time feel more special and connected. One of my favorite moments was during our very first morning meeting on the rug: students sat and shared with one another, and you could see how being in that space helped them feel at ease and willing to open up. It has already become a place where friendships grow and our classroom community is built.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, this rug will continue to be the backdrop for so many learning experiences—from reading stories together to working on group projects. I needed another incubator that would hold and turn the duck eggs because they tend to be a little bigger. About a month ago, the class and I got the new incubator set up, set the eggs, maintained the correct temperature and humidity, and crossed our fingers. I am thrilled to report we ended up with five chicks and two ducks! \r\n\r\nWe then placed them in our new brooder box with some food and water. The chicks and ducks were very content and the students enjoyed watching them immensely. Well, to be honest, everyone at the school enjoyed watching them! We had lots of students and teachers visiting and my class excitedly filled them in on the names of the chicks and ducks. \r\n\r\nAfter about a week, we said goodbye as they returned to our local farms. My students really struggle with reading. The Montessori reading workbook\r\nhas helped my students tremendously. They have really made a lot of growth with letters and sounds. I made a workbook for each of my non-readers, and each day we review a few letters and they trace them and match the words that go with them. My students are now ready to do the second part of the book, which would involve saying each word aloud and pasting the word that goes with each picture. This will build on their vocabulary.\r\n\r\nMy writing groups really enjoy their writing prompt journals. Each day, I select a new prompt. My students read and discuss the word bank that is given. It presents a title and a first sentence. An example is \"Best Friends.\" My students were able to write one to two sentences for each prompt. We read their great stories aloud and it has made a joyful moment.\r\n\r\nAfter I teach a reading lesson, we have been playing some of the games that were ordered. The comprehension game has been their favorite. They have learned all about\r\nthe author's point of view. They enjoy taking turns reading the questions out loud and placing the cards on the board. The alphabet game has really helped my non-readers with the letters of the alphabet and their sounds.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for being part of my students learning process.","fullyFundedDate":1728655177320,"projectUrl":"project/happiness-is-learning-to-read/8728473/","projectTitle":"Happiness Is Learning To Read","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Beja","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3505340_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725208102806","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3505340"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2201","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":505,"numTeachers":32,"percentFrplEligible":44,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":76,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":96.4,"schoolId":2201,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about E.M.
